Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) is a solitary dwarf palm 3-3.5m tall with a hugely swollen trunk up to 60cm in diameter. Trunks are rounded in young specimens and flatten out a little when it gets older. It has upwardly arching feather leaves (pinnate) on top of a smooth green crown shaft. Leaves grow up to 3m in length. Bottle Palms originate in Round Island but is almost extinct in native habitat. It is however widely cultivated for its unique beauty all around the world.
Fiji Fan Palm (Pritchardia pacifica) is a stunning palm native to Tonga. With large flat stiff rounded leaves, they were traditionally used as fans for the chiefs of the village. Reaches a height of 5-10 metres, this tropical palm tolerates coastal spray. Palms for sale: approx 30-40cm tall
Lipstick Palm seeds. A brilliantly, almost unbelievably vivid red trunk & crown shaft, found in lowland coastal swamps in SE Asia. It’s a medium sized, to about 6m, clumping palm. One of the most spectacular and colourful tropical palms and extremely popular as garden and landscaping plant.
Ponytail Palm - Beaucarnea - Ponytails are a very interesting plant that have a massive swollen base to their trunks. Trunks can reach 3 meters in diameter and the tree 9m tall. They are native to the dry, desert regions of Mexico and Southern United States. They make a hardy and interesting pot plant for many years as they grow large enough for their final garden position.
Graceful small palm to 2-3m tall with bamboo-like long slender stems. Native to Mexico and Central America where is grows as an understory palm. The plant naturally spreads by offshoots similar to Bamboo. The Bamboo Palm is frequently used indoors; it is tolerant to low-light areas and is low maintenance.
Lady Palms - Rhaphis Excelsa, are very elegant, graceful multi stemmed palms, which grow to 3-4m tall. They have deep green, glossy leaves. Easy to grow, adaptable to a wide range of conditions and soil types. Lady Palms are quite cold hardy, handling temperatures as low as -5C. Plants for sale: approx 20- 25cm tall. Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco), Living Fossil! Fascinating plant with thick trunk which branches widely, crown of thick blue-green foliage. Very hardy, frost & drought tolerant. Full sun, and well suited to pots. Plants for sale: 15cm tall
Parlour Palm Chamaedorea Elegans - Very attractive small palm. Grow to 2m tall. Understory plant, shady sheltered position. Good in pots, gardens, house plant. Cold tolerant. Plants for sale approx 30cm tall.
Dwarf Date Palm Tree - Phoenix roebelenii. The Dwarf Date Palm is a beautiful, solitary palm which grows to around 3m tall. The old leaves form a Hula skirt around the trunk. Flowers are cream, and are followed by egg shaped, black, edible fruit.
Cardboard Palm (Zamia furfuracea) Member of the Cycad family (Cycad is Greek for ‘palm’, as most Cycads bear resemblance to palms). It is native to the warm sandy coastal plains of Mexico. It’s a very distinctive cycad with thick, felty leaves up to 1.2m long that emerge from the middle of the plant, forming a rosette. When grown in bright light, the rosette becomes a 1m high clump of tightly overlapping that can (although slowly) grow to 1.8m in diameter. The leaves are slightly fuzzy and feel a bit like cardboard when rubbed. Foliage emerges from a thick fleshy trunk that serves as water storage in drought.
The Australian Fan Palm is one of Australia's most beautiful native palms. It originates from the North Queensland Rainforests, from north of Townsville to Cape York. The Australian Fan Palm has very large round fan leaves and is best grown in a shady spot. Leaves will be greener in deeper shade but does need some light to grow. As the Aussie Fan Palm grows taller it will, in its natural habitat, receive more sun and will handle full sun when it outgrows the other trees. Travellers Palm - One of our favourites! A beautiful tree from the Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) family which produces big banana-like foliage. Foliage arranges itself in a fan-shaped form. Though technically not a palm tree, it is often called one because of the short palm-like trunk & foliage. It grows 7-15m tall. The Travellers Palm produces white flowers, followed by brown fruits. Seeds are a wonderful blue colour. It derives its name ‘Travellers Palm’ from the fact that it collects and holds rainwater in its leaf folds and flower bracts. Thirsty travellers knew to seek out this tree to collect water. Ravenala madagascariensis is a stunning tropical plant and would act well as a feature plant, or as back drop for other tropical plants. It is often used to line driveways and property entries, for which the fan shape lends itself very well. Plants for sale: approx 30cm tall. These plants are best in the ground as they are fast growing. These are not the most beautiful plants, but they are extremely hardy and ready to go into the ground and take off. Good root systems!
Zamia integrifolia (Coontie Palm)- This amazing palm was harvested almost to extinction in the USA in the 1800's, thousands of plants were harvested from the wild and their roots processed into a type of arrowroot powder. Drought, frost and salt tolerant, this palm is a survivor!
Bangalow Palm - Archontophoenix cunninghamiana - Native to Australia. Up to 25 meters tall. Smooth trunk with 2m long fronds. Position: full sun to part shade. Fast growing palm.
Chinese Windmill Palm - Trachycarpus fortunei; Trachycarpus fortunei is known to be extremely tough tolerating winter weather below -20C and covered in snow! It also survives salty coastlines of Scotland. It even grows well here in Queensland and offers a tropical looking option for the southern states.
The Pemba Palm is a fast growing palm from Pemba, a small island of the coast of Africa. It grows up to 12m tall and has beautiful deep green, bamboo-like, ringed trunks. It is similar to Dypsis lanceolata.
